The Expat Magazine in Singapore yet to pay me for photos

If you are considering submitting photos to The Expat, Singapore, perhaps take note of this cautionary tale.

Back in 2008, I was asked if I could send some Hong Kong photos to the Expat Magazine, in Singapore.

I did so, noting re charge for publication. Had reply from editor.

Heard nothing more from the magazine, but writer who'd suggested I might send shots to illustrate his article later sent me a pdf file with the published article, which appeared August 2008, and included 5 photos by me. (Usually, magazines are efficient at sending copies of at least articles, or even whole magazines, when my articles/photos are published.)

I then contacted the magazine, saying I was due payment. No replies to emails; so I phoned, several times as found editor very hard to reach, but eventually got through to him and said I wasn't happy - editor seemed surprised by this, suggesting it was me who was being rude.

I sent editor an email:

Quote:
Looks like you used 5 Lantau photos by me. (credited rather more - seems you're not just sloppy at replying to emails and phone calls...)

So, at HK$400 each, HK$2000 owed to me.

I'll post an invoice.

received reply:

Thanks. I'll attend to the matter. I left for several months and then rejoined to discover a number of matters had not been attended to in my absence. I also have several other roles to manage apart from editorial; while I appreciate your payment is long overdue (for which I apologise), I could live without the tone of your email.

Further emails, maybe another phone call or two, led to request in July 09 - 11 months after article appeared - for an invoice. I duly sent this.

No reply.

Sent invoice again. Phoned, spoke to person in accounts dept who had requested the invoice: she seemed a bit embarrassed by the issue, but said not her fault.

I've again emailed, asking re whether payment will come by end of this year (which would be 15 months after article appeared).

No reply.

I've had other publications make late payments, sometimes sending notes re payments coming up, so I had some idea what was going on; but in my view The Expat totally crap in my case.
