How to Take Photos

Photography is not a technical subject. Here, I only briefly cover the technical aspects, and instead mainly look at how to make good or even outstanding images.

Micro four thirds system for digital photos and videos

At last, I've upgraded from compact/small sensor digital cameras, and moved further away from using film for premium images. After research online, and juggling pros and cons, I opted for a micro four thirds system camera (an Olympus E-PL1).

Using Nikon P100 super-zoom as ultra versatile digital camera

p100For a recent project involving biodiversity surveys, I wanted an inexpensive and lightweight camera with which I could photograph subjects ranging from landscapes to birds. I checked out the "super-zoom" digital cameras, which include lenses that can zoom from wide-angle to powerful telephoto - and settled on Nikon P100.

Using Olympus PEN E-PL1

e-pl1I have entered the micro four thirds system of digital photography - and video shooting - with an Olympus PEN E-PL1. Delighted with the camera.

Using Olympus 75-300 zoom for wildlife photos

I'm using the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 micro four thirds lens with my E-PL1 and E-P3, chiefly for photographing wildlife, especially birds.

Using Olympus 9-18mm wide-angle zoom

Though not fast, the Olympus 9-18mm zoom is small and lightweight. I find it an excellent lens for landscape photography, using it chiefly with a polarising filter attached.

Below are some of the shots I've taken with the lens.

Using Olympus 45mm micro four thirds lens

After reading strong reviews of the Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm f1.8 lens, I decided to buy one - for a mixture of portrait, street and low light photography, along with occasional wildlife and landscapes.

It's an excellent lens: compact and lightweight, as well as fast.

Below are some of the shots I've taken with the 45mm lens, which on micro four thirds cameras is equivalent to a 90mm lens in a 35mm camera system.

Using Olympus Pen E-P3 camera

I've upgraded from my E-PL1, through buying an Olympus Pen E-P3 micro four thirds camera - which I find highly impressive.

Take top photos w compact cameras

You will be amazed at the quality of the pictures you get with compact cameras - both film and digital - if you keep in mind the following points.

Sanyo Xacti HD2000 and Mac OS X

Though Sanyo Xacti HD2000 results look good in Quicktime, the files are not readily edited in Final Cut Express. It is, however, possible to edit using Final Cut Express - by first converting files, or doing rough edit with iMovie.

Tips on using Sanyo Xacti HD2000

Here are a few suggestions on how to use the Sanyo Xacti HD2000, which is certainly a nifty little camera.

Free SEO advice

Here's some brief advice on ensuring web pages rank well in search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. While I don't claim to be an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) hotshot, even some webmeisters can get a bit bamboozled at times.

Drupal newbie notes

Notes from my early experiences in using Drupal.

Bad bots

Written after I had problems with rampant spiders on my websites, and used a script to ban bad bots.

Comment spam

How marvellous it seemed when I first found I could add forums to websites, and allow people to comment. But as many a webmaster has quickly learned, there's a dark side to forums and comments: they can become magnets for spammers.

Adsense n Drupal 6

I've been using Drupal 5, which has a nifty module for using Google Adsense. However, on moving sites to Drupal 6, found this module was yet to be upgraded. I tried Adsense in a block within a Drupal 6 site, but it didn't work. So, searched for answer, and found in a thread on Drupal site.

Why Migrate from Joomla to Drupal?

I've had an email from someone asking me if it's worth migrating a Joomla 1.0 site to Joomla! 1.5 or - as I've done with a couple of sites, including this - to Drupal. (This site's Drupal 6; Drupal 5 remains current, too.) My reply:

From Joomla to Drupal

I've written in another article on this site re my gradual disillusionment with Joomla!, and of considering switching to Drupal for some time. This had seemed a daunting prospect; there was an article on Drupal site about converting from Joomla, but involved digging around w MySQL databases - not something I felt up to.

Drupal images n photo galleries

Drupal 6 is a curious beast when it comes to images n photos. It is possible to create superb, image rich sites with Drupal; but for a non coding type like me, there is scope for befuddlement.

Really Useful Drupal 6 Modules

Here are several of the Drupal 6 modules I'm using.

FCKeditor and IMCE w Drupal

Posted to Drupal forum, to thread started by someone who had tried but failed to use FCKeditor and IMCE to try and add photos to articles. Much the same applies for newer CKeditor.

Just found this thread; after looking re using IMCE to create folders for users [not sure it can do so for each indiv user I'd like to ]

GMap and Location modules w Drupal

From a post I made to Drupal site, to thread w some people confused re using GMap and Location modules, which are a great help with adding Google Maps to a Drupal site, but seem sparsely documented.

Checking site for dead links on Mac

I use Drupal for creating websites, and till recently hadn't found a way to check for dead links. I use Mac, and have found that Integrity does a grand job.

Boost Drupal website speed

Looking for info on ways to enhance a Drupal website's speed, I found methods tended to be for hotshot developer types, perhaps in charge of their own dedicated servers. But there are methods, including using Drupal's own caching plus the Boost module, that work on shared hosting.

Fusion a nifty Drupal starter theme

if you're looking for a Drupal 6 theme you can customise, maybe give Fusion a try.

Drupal Views Gallery w customisation

I had long thought Drupal's Views module could help power a photo gallery, but was daunted by the prospect of actually creating one. Happily, though, KarenS has created the Views Gallery module - which makes it relatively easy to start a gallery.

Mobile site in Drupal using Mobile Tools Module

If you want to create a mobile version of an existing Drupal site, including if multisite installation, the following notes - on using the Mobile Tools module - may help.
